Ceraph
Ruins and visions
To burn always with this hard, gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life. Not the fruit of experience, but experience itself, is the end. A counted number of pulses only is given to us of a variegated, dramatic life.
Ceraph’s name draws together serif, seraph and ceramic. Its letterforms are built on complex tensions: roundness against angularity, classical form against contemporary construction, expressiveness against structural rigour. The idea was first sketched in 2018, and designed over a period of five years from 2019–2024. It asks how restrained, legible letterforms can carry subtle expressive resonance.

Kildare Saint Brigid’s Flame
Every moment some form grows perfect in hand or face; some tone on the hills or the sea is choicer than the rest; some mood of passion or insight or intellectual excitement is irresistibly real and attractive to us, for that moment only. Not the fruit of experience, but experience itself, is the end. A counted number of pulses only is given to us of a variegated, dramatic life.
How may we see in them all that is to be seen in them by the finest senses? How shall we pass most swiftly from point to point, and be present always at the focus where the greatest number of vital forces unite in their purest energy? To burn always with this hard, gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life.

If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only ways I know it. Is there any other way?
You ask of my companions. Hills, sir, and the sundown, and a dog large as myself, that my father bought me. They are better than beings because they know, but do not tell; and the noise in the pool at noon excels my piano.
